“But youth, of course, must have its fling,
so pardon us, so pardon us.”

“And don’t, in girlhood’s happy spring,
be hard on us, be hard on us,
if we’re inclined to dance and sing.”

The Mikado Summer Concert 2022

July 23 and July 24, 2022

The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company and the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra will present a concert version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, at the Lake Harriet Bandshell, on July 23rd and 24th.

The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company believes that The Mikado is an extraordinary, classic theatrical work that should be performed, with the firm conviction that that which is best about the piece … it’s beautiful music, it’s delightful dialogue and hilarious storyline … can be preserved while that which is inappropriate can be removed.  The concert version of The Mikado that we will present, therefore, has been revised to eliminate the negative racial stereotypes.

The performance is free and open to the public.  There are benches available directly in front of the stage and lots of lawn seating available in the surrounding area.  Plan to arrive early to get a good spot as our concerts are one of the most popular events of the summer at the Lake Harriet Bandshell.

When: Saturday, July 23rd, 7:30, and
             Sunday, July 24th, 5:30

Where: The Lake Harriet Bandshell, Minneapolis, Minnesota

The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company has collaborated with Jere Lanz and the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra for many years in presenting a concert version of one of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.

“A very good house. I wish I’d been in time for the performance.”
